Rhea's Salon of Beauty

This sign has been advertising this beauty shop since the late 50s or early 60s.  While the shop is still in business, the sign no longer works.  It is found at the corner of Mandana and Lakeshore Avenue in the Lakeshore shopping district east of Lake Merritt.

  1. I'm not in the market for beauty treatment, but if I was, this would put me off, even if it was in good condition. Nevertheless a worthy historical capture.

  2. Back when I shot it was an overcast day, and the colors came across as a bit more like neopolitan ice cream. Still doesn't bring to mind beauty, though.

  3. Working or not, its still a beauty in my eyes. They just don't make them like that any more. Nice shot!

  4. uh...
Do you think Rhea's could help «Louis'» (lack of) hair?
Or would he look more like the rust spot on this sign than he already does?

  5. Seems to me I'd get a classic sign like that repaired.

  6. Very cool and very retro. I'm glad to see it hasn't been torn down.

  7. Definately a sign of the times. Probably a "go-to" place for ladies back then..and maybe some of them still go there.
